The best military calisthenics app is one with a structured multi-week plan, real instructors showing every move, short sessions you’ll actually finish, and honest pricing. By those measures, our picks are MLT for men and HQ for women.
Full disclosure: we make both apps. That’s why we’ve been specific about what to look for, so you can judge any app, including ours, on the same terms.
What makes a military calisthenics app worth using?
Most fitness apps fail for the same reasons. Before downloading anything, check for these five things:
- A real program, not a workout library. Hundreds of random workouts mean you decide every day, and decisions are where habits die.
- Real people demonstrating. Animated figures can’t show the subtle cues that keep your back safe.
- Short sessions. If a session takes 45 minutes, you’ll skip it on busy days.
- Progression you can see. Levels, check-ins or streaks that show you’re improving.
- Clear pricing. You should know the price and how to cancel before you start.
1. MLT: Military Calisthenics for Men (best for men)
MLT is a 28-day military-style bodyweight program built around four levels: Recruit, Soldier, Operator and Elite. Every session is led on video by a real calisthenics instructor.
- Sessions: 10–21 minutes, no equipment
- Structure: six training days and one endurance day per week
- Tracking: daily check-ins and a 28-day challenge
- Rating: 4.5 stars on the App Store
- Price: free download, 3-day free trial, then $29.99/year
The 28-day challenge and check-in feature also help me stay consistent instead of skipping workouts.
App Store review of MLT
Best for: men who want a plan that tells them exactly what to do each day. Not ideal for: people who want gym or weightlifting programs, or Android users (iPhone only for now).

2. HQ: Military Calisthenics for Women (best for women)
HQ is the women’s edition, with the same structure and instructor-led video sessions, programmed for women’s starting points and goals.
Best for: women who want strength and conditioning at home without a gym. See our complete guide for women.

What goes wrong with other workout apps?
We tried a lot of fitness apps while building ours. These are the common problems, and how to spot them:
- Generic “AI” plans that change daily but never progress in a clear way
- Libraries without a path: great variety, no answer to “what do I do today?”
- Long sessions designed for gym-goers, not busy people training at home
- Hidden pricing that only appears after a long sign-up quiz
- Hard cancellation via a website instead of your phone’s settings
None of these make an app bad for everyone. They do make it harder to stay consistent, which is the only thing that really matters.
Free apps and YouTube vs a paid app
Free workouts are fine if you already know what to do. The trade-off is structure and accountability.
A large study of 61,293 gym members found the most effective nudge rewarded people for returning after a missed workout.(1) Built-in check-ins help in the same way.
We compare the options fairly in app vs YouTube workouts and app vs personal trainer.
How much should a military calisthenics app cost?
Many fitness apps bill monthly, which adds up fast over a year. MLT costs $29.99 a year after a 3-day free trial, which works out to about 58 cents a week.

How do you cancel if it’s not for you?
On iPhone, subscriptions bought through the App Store are cancelled in Settings → your name → Subscriptions.(2) Cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid being charged.
